In the heart of Valsavarenche, nestled in the Gran Paradiso National Park, the Federico Chabod Refuge (2,750 m) is one of the most captivating starting points for reaching the 4,061-meter summit of Gran Paradiso. A climb that combines wild nature, ancient glaciers, and the authentic charm of classic mountaineering.
The Chabod Refuge: a welcome among glaciers and rock
The climb to the refuge begins from Pravieux (1,830 m). The trail winds through larch forests and high-altitude pastures, with increasingly expansive views of the Gran Paradiso massif.
After about 2 hours of walking, you reach the welcoming and modern refuge, with breathtaking views of the north face of the mountain and the Laveciau glacier.
The ascent to Gran Paradiso: the thrill of the summit
From the refuge, the climb begins in the early hours of the morning. After a stretch on moraine, you reach the Laveciau glacier, often riddled with crevasses that require caution and a roped team. The final stretch includes the famous rocky ridge and the summit's "Madonnina," a spiritual symbol and a moving destination for those who reach the summit.
Complete experience: effort, nature and conquest
The ascent to Gran Paradiso is more than just a physical challenge: it's a trek through wild environments, between exposed ice and open skies. It requires preparation, a mountain guide (for the less experienced), and a profound respect for the mountains.
Helpful tips:
- Stay overnight at the refuge the night before the climb
- Helmet, harness, crampons and ice axe are mandatory
- Trust a mountain guide if you have no glacier experience
- Recommended period: June – September
Gran Paradiso isn't just a peak: it's an experience that changes your pace, your outlook, and often even something inside you.
