Among the most famous routes in the Italian Alps, the ascent of Gran Paradiso (4,061 m) from the Vittorio Emanuele II Refuge is one of the most thrilling experiences for high-altitude enthusiasts. Located in the heart of the Gran Paradiso National Park, this route offers glaciers, spectacular views, and the satisfaction of touching one of Italy's most beloved peaks.

The Vittorio Emanuele II Refuge: a high-altitude welcome

The refuge is located at 2,732 m above sea level, above the village of Pont in Valsavarenche. The climb to the refuge starts from Pont (1,960 m) and takes about 1.5–2 hours, along a well-marked trail through pastures, rocks, and Alpine views. The modern and spacious refuge (with approximately 120 beds) is a favorite with mountaineers and mountain enthusiasts. Despite its altitude, it offers hot food, efficient service, and a friendly atmosphere.

The climb to Gran Paradiso

We set off from the refuge at dawn, equipped with a headlamp and a light backpack, to tackle the approximately 1,300 m of elevation gain that separates us from the sky. The route covers:

  • Moraines and high altitude trails
  • The Gran Paradiso Glacier, increasingly sensitive to climate change
  • The final ridge on rock (II grade), short but exposed, which leads to the famous statue of the Madonna on the summit

Technical data:

  • Duration: 5-6 hours uphill, 3-4 downhill
  • Equipment: crampons, ice axe, helmet, harness, rope
  • Recommended with a mountain guide if you have no glacier experience

The ascent of Gran Paradiso offers a perfect blend of technique, natural beauty, and personal satisfaction. Upon returning to the refuge, the landscape appears different, as if the climb had transformed not only the day... but also those who experienced it.
